Journey is an American rock band that began touring in 1973, who has provided their audiences with fantastic concerts and popular music over the decades. The band started in San Francisco composed of former members of other bands such as Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. Journey, have over time, benchmarked as one of the most successful and surviving rock band in music history.
Journey formed their classic lineup with the vocalist Steve Perry, guitarist Neal Schon, bassist Ross Valory, keyboard player Jonathan Cain, and drummer Steve Smith around the late 1970s and pumped out hit album after hit album through the 1980s, with anthemic songs that still get a bump in the party playlist today.
They finally cracked with their 1978 album Infinity – which contained ‘Lights’ and ‘Wheel in the Sky,’ two of Journey’s seven Top 40 hits – and followed that up with Evolution (1979) and Departure (1980). In 1981, the band finally went supernova with Escape, which contained, next to ‘Don’t Stop Believin’’ (now considered one of the most popular and enduring songs in all of rock history), two other hit singles – ‘Open Arms’ and ‘Who’s Crying Now’.
Frontiers (1983), their next full-length, featured the singles ‘Separate Ways (Worlds Apart)’ and ‘Faithfully’ and sold half a million more copies in the US alone. With insistent, big-wall-of-sound rock-out anthems and tender, plaintive ballads in equal measure, it drew fanboys and groupies, moms and preppies to the show.
Journey’s line-up has changed over the years, but the band has, nevertheless, endured as a premier rock act, such as when the charismatic singer Steve Perry left in the late 1990s. Lead vocals were then taken over by a young and talented Filipino singer, Arnel Pineda, who joined the band in 2007. Since then, Journey has remained one of the most beloved and successful rock bands, drawing legions of fans every time they take the stage for their popular hits.
They are also famous for their exciting live shows and continue to tour extensively with phenomenal musical authority and boundless elan. New audiences are also discovered each year, evidence of Journey’s age-transcending appeal.
